Endoscopic Hallux
Limitus Surgery
Hallux limitus is a progressive degenerative joint disease of the great toe joint.
Hallux limitus also goes by the terms turf toe and hallux rigidus. In early
stages of hallux limitus (stage
1 to 2), arthroscopic joint debridement can be performed to repair
defects in the cartilage of the great toe joint. This procedure is
not effective in late stages of hallux limitus or hallux rigidus.
Arthroscopic debridement of hallux limitus is performed on an
out-patient basis at a surgery center or hospital. The choice of
anesthesia is usually local anesthetic with sedation. The
procedure takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. Patients are
able to ambulate the day of surgery. Most patients return to a
regular shoe within a week.
It's important to recognize that arthroscopic debridement of hallux
limitus is limited to the early stages of hallux limitus.
Additional procedures used to correct hallux limitus are discussed in
this link.
