Anytime your foot
is below the level of your heart, your foot is going to swell.
Elevate the surgical site approximately 6” above the level of your
heart. This includes the drive home from the hospital.
-
Keep dressing dry
unless otherwise instructed. Do not change the dressing unless
otherwise instructed. All bandage changes will be done in the
office.
-
If you are allowed
to bear weight on your foot, be sure to wear your surgical shoe or
cast as directed.
-
Apply an ice pack
to your operative site continuously. Avoid direct contact to the
skin.
-
There may be a
small amount of bleeding on the dressing, this is normal. If
bleeding is noted, reduce activities, prop up the foot and re-apply
ice.
-
Take medications
as prescribed.
-
If we have
instructed you to bear weight on your foot, limit your walking. 90%
of post-operative complications come from being too active. Do what
is comfortable. Your ability to get around will gradually increase
day to day. DO NOT push yourself. If you are walking and your feet
become tender or swollen, sit down, prop them up and apply ice.
-
Call to make a
post-op appointment in our office. We see patients usually for
their first post-op visit two-three days following surgery.
-
If you have any
questions or problems relating to your surgery, we encourage you to
call our office. If calling after our business hours, your call will
be returned as soon as possible.
