Alamut is a parable written in 1939 by the Romanian author, Vladimir Bartol.  This book takes place in 13 century northern Iran and looks into the reasons behind why smart but impressionable individuals can become caught up in religious fervor.

 

Ordinary Heroes: A NovelOrdinary Heroes by Scott Turow

Turow weaves a wonderful tale based upon the search of a young man interested in learning more about who his parents really were.  Set in France during the mid 1940's

These three stories look at life in central western Italy during the rule of fascism.  Silone was viewed as the writer of the people in their fight against fascism.  And interestingly, Silone was identified in the mid 60's as a double agent who worked for both the resistance and Mussolini government.

These are wonderful stories of life in rural Italy.
